Angela Murphy
specialist physician
Dr Angela Murphy graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1993. In 2000 she qualified as a Specialist Physician and joined the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the then Johannesburg Hospital.
After working at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre and Springs Parklands Clinic, she opened her practice in Boksburg in 2008. She retains a special interest in Endocrinology and a large part of her practice is diabetes and obesity.
Dr Murphy’s practice includes:
1. Sunward Centre for Diabetes Excellence (CDE)
2. Accredited Insulin Pump Centre
3. Discovery Diabetes Care Provider
4. Netcare Sunward Park Bariatric Centre of Excellence
The field of diabetes is exceptionally dynamic with new products and technologies coming to market at an exciting rate. The field of bariatric surgery (usually this is gastric bypass surgery) has now expanded to that of metabolic surgery, i.e. an option to surgically treat diabetes. To date it is the most likely way to induce remission of Type 2 diabetes. Fifteen years ago diabetes became an even bigger part of Dr Murphy’s life when her 2 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Along with her DNE, Sr Christine Manga, Dr Murphy runs an insulin pump centre which offers a whole new way of controlling diabetes. However, their passion for looking after the young Type 1 patient extends far SUNWARD PARK MEDICAL CENTRE beyond pumps – they strive to improve the lives of these young people with every treatment option. In the pre-COVID era the SWPMC was often the venue of exciting Diabetes Information Evenings. Watch out on the social media pages to see new developments of this service. Dr Murphy is a member of SEMDSA (Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of South Africa). She is a sought after speaker for CPD (continuing professional development) events and regularly writes articles on diabetes.

Christine Manga
diabetic nurse educator
Christine qualified as a registered nurse at BG Alexander Nursing College in 1998. After working in the United Kingdom for several months she joined a busy Boksburg general practice and eventually became part of the staff of the Boksburg Medicross. She is a qualified HIV counsellor.
In 2011 Christine embarked on her career in diabetes, first joining Dr Angela Murphy in her Boksburg CDE diabetes practice, and then enrolling for further study. The CDE course in diabetes was followed by a Diploma in Diabetes Management from the University of South Wales. In 2015 Christine
completed her MSc in Diabetes, again from the University of South Wales, making her a highly qualified Diabetes Nurse Educator.
Christine has participated in clinical trials in the field of diabetes and attended many educational courses, including in Insulin Pump Training at the prestigious King’s College Hospital, London. She is an DNE for the Guidepost Program that many medical aids subscribe to for their diabetic patients.
In addition, Christine is a regular contributor to Diabetes Focus, the magazine published by Diabetes South Africa. Christine’s motto is knowledge is power. By giving patients living with diabetes knowledge, she puts the power of managing their condition in their hands.
In her spare time Christine practices the healthy lifestyle she espouses as an active runner. She has participated in several marathons, half-marathons and many a park run.
